The ORE owls have been hard at work and in the next few days you will see our most recent projects. But for starters..... We used our kiln!! Because of the awesome support of family and friends through Donorschoose.com, our first graders are creating clay owls. Glazes will be coming next week. Happy holiday weekend :)

Students from across the district were celebrated tonight at the New Bern-Craven County Public Library Art Reception. Families, Art Teachers, and Principals had an opportunity to mingle while viewing the beautiful and talented work on display. This special evening also included a contribution to the ARTS in our schools by the New Bern Women's Club. Thank for your donation which will support the art teachers needs for supplies for their students'. What a big week! We had an art show, Huichol yarn paintings progressing, kindergarteners practicing shape art, third graders finishing their Henri Matisse stained glass window collages, and me face painting awesome kiddos at our school's fall festival. It was a great week to be an art teacher :) Our art reporter in second grade today wrote six things he wanted our community to know about our project.
"We is making yarn art. We is making yarn to color it. Yarn is colorful and nice. Yarn art is like painting. Yarn art is fun like a free day. We is making art because the Mexico." ****Remember readers that our projects have been inspired by Huichol Indian yarn painting that originated from the western mountain communities in Mexico. This student chose the scorpion symbol for his project. These fall trees look amazing! Way to go first grade in demonstrating how artists show the time of day using the changing color of the sky. Kindergarten students were challenged today to use shapes to create pictures. I modeled this first by creating a simple cat with shapes. As I placed each pattern block shape that made the cat, students would name the shapes...
"hexagon! Triangle! Diamonds!" At the end , students could tell me it was a cat. But I said, "Are you sure?? Or is it just shapes that look like a cat?" After a few giggles the students began to realize that everyday things could be created using shapes. To begin practicing this concept, students went to various shape centers to create their own animals using only shapes. Classes will continue practicing shape creations with center for two more classes. "We are learning about Matisse's shapes, and how to cut them out pencils. And then glue them down. And use more than three colors and make 5 or more shapes. We learned about Matisse because he made famous art" -Christian, 3rd grade Third graders are learning how to draw with scissors like famous collage artist, Henri Matisse. By observing his famous shapes and using visualizing techniques, students successfully cut out images of the observed shapes without drawing them first with a pencil. Student was asked the following questions:
"What are we doing today in class?" -We are getting with a partner and in a magazine we find the Principles of art that we assigned to do. "Why is it important to Art?" -Because we find different things that are for Art and we learn Principles of art. We also do good in partners when we do partner work. -Lesly, 5th grade Student reporter was asked the following questions:
"What are we doing today?" -We are making yarn paintings "Who were we inspired by?" -Paintings that are made out of yarn. The people are of Mexico that made the yarn paintings. They are Huichol Indians. -Taylor , 2nd grade |
