"Based on the color of the sky, what time of day is it?"
Today my first graders and I set out to connect environmental science with art. Our essential question of our lesson is "How does art show the time of day?"
Initial student responses included painting clocks on our art and checking our cell phones. Lol. We progressed by examining four landscape photos indicating significant color variations of the sky based on the position of the sun. The times of day student teams identified were morning, mid-day (also known as recess time to my kids), evening and night time. We finished class by starting paintings that use color palettes specific to the studied times of day. Be on the look out for some awesome sky paintings by first graders. Also, encourage your student to notice the color change in the sky around dinner time and on the way to school. Ask them to name the colors they observe :)
