Kindergarten students were challenged today to use shapes to create pictures. I modeled this first by creating a simple cat with shapes. As I placed each pattern block shape that made the cat, students would name the shapes...
"hexagon! Triangle! Diamonds!"
At the end , students could tell me it was a cat. But I said, "Are you sure?? Or is it just shapes that look like a cat?" After a few giggles the students began to realize that everyday things could be created using shapes.
To begin practicing this concept, students went to various shape centers to create their own animals using only shapes. Classes will continue practicing shape creations with center for two more classes.
