Happy third week of school to all my artists! Kindergarten has been in the art room for two rotations now and have been working through a beginning of the year skills assessment. Students are given oral instructions on how to color or design a paper with various shapes, without any visual examples to reference. Instructions include drawing line patterns in rectangles and making a triangle look like a party hat. We accomplish this step by step process on the first day of art, and then proceed to cut out shapes and glue them to look like a person on the second day. Once again, this process is for me to see where students are in their skills as they're entering the school year, while also introducing them to multiple art tools at one time. So much if this time is hands off for me and allow students to engage as they are exploring the art supplies with limited instructions. Our students have really enjoyed this and are looking forward to beginning to learn about self portraits next week.
